We always get excited when the season is about to begin in the Adirondack Mountains. It is great to see trees budding and bulbs trying to peak out from the ground. The air is crisp and all you smell is the fresh pine from our massive trees. It was exciting to have a moose siting yesterday. He came through our back woods and swam across Lake Luzerne. I’m a city girl, I had no idea moose could swim.
Lots of events starting to happen in May, craft shows, art festivals, the Elvis Festival, and a new 1st time Italian Festival in Lake George. Memorial Weekend is when it feels as if the gate open up, and everything is open.

I don’t know about every one else, but I for one am very happy to see 2012 come to an end. It has been a year of turmoil. So many of our guests and family were affected by Hurricane Sandy and are putting their lives and their homes back together. My childhood memories of Seaside Heights and my families’ summer bungalow in Point Pleasant Beach are now just a memory. I am purposely writing this on December 20th because on the 21st when the Mayan calendar ends, I am hoping we are starting a new era on this planet where we can create peace, prosperity and happiness for everyone. On this note, Gene and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and love, peace and good health for 2013.

Guests of the Inn have been asking me to share recipes I make during the Fall.
One of my favorites is Pumpkin Bread. The recipe follows;

Lamplight Inn B&B Pumpkin Bread

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
1 cup corn oil
3 eggs beaten
2 cups canned pumpkin
3 cups flour ( I use only Pillsbury all purpose flour)
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts

Mix together the sugars and oil. Cream together. Use a Kitchen Aid mixer if you have one. Beat in eggs and pumpkin. Add remaining ingredients to creamed mixture, blending well. Pour into greased loaf pans.

preheated 350 degree oven. Makes 4 small loafs or 2 medium loafs.

Another favorite of mine is a Crumb Coffee Cake. This recipe was given to me by a good friend who’s Aunt worked in a Long Island bakery and made this for years. This can be made any time of year, and is perfect for company. Try nuking this for 20 seconds in the morning and put a little butter on it. YUM!!!

Crumb Coffee Cake

Crumbs
4 cups all purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons cinnamon
1 pound of margarine melted (do not use butter)
Mix together with fingers to form crumbs

Cake Batter
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup milk
Mix all together, spread in 13 x 9 inch greased pan. This will be a very thin layer. Gently place crumbs on top
with fingers.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven. Test in a 1/2 hour

Either one of these recipes can easily be doubled.

The air in the southern Adirondacks is so crisp right now. The color is starting to appear on the trees. Our Sugar Maple is right on time, and always peaks on our wedding anniversary – October 14th. The days are warm and the nights are cool…sweater weather. My favorite time of year. The best colors for foliage will be between October 4th until October 16th. Remember…the leaves are changing midweek too. Some of the favorite Fall activities include Prospect Mountain Scenic Parkway with a 100 mile view at the summit. Drive 3 levels and take a tram to the peak. We can pack you a picnic to enjoy at the summit. Another favorite is horseback riding at Bennett’s Riding Stable about 5 miles from the Inn. They will take you on a scenic trail ride. Scenic rides are everywhere. We will direct you. Come see us and take a deep breath of fresh Adirondack air.

I just wanted to take a moment to talk about the pretty well kept Town of Lake Luzerne. Here we sit just a few miles south of Lake George Village and just north of Saratoga Springs. The 2 big named Towns. Coming from the north to south along Route 9N through Lake Luzerne is Lake Vanare feeding into Forest Lake which continues to form Fourth, Third and Second Lakes and the last is Lake Luzerne which outlets into Mill Creek and then into the Hudson River. The narrowest point of the Hudson River is called Rockwell Falls where the Gorge runs into the Sacandaga River and Reservoir. A beautiful scenic spot. Whitewater rafting and tubing are popular activities in Town, both Sacandaga Outdoor Center and Tubby Tubes are busy running trips on the Sacandaga River. They also have kayaks for rent. Bennetts Horse Stable has been in Lake Luzerne since 1942, and also has guided snowmobile rides in the winter. The Adirondack Folk School is a fairly new addition to the Village of Lake Luzerne, and has been a wonderful addition to the Community. The School is teaching crafts and culture of the Adirondack Region. The Luzerne Music Center on Lake Luzerne is a unique summer music camp for students from 11 to 18. During July and August there is a Faculty Artist Concert Series on Friday evenings and on Monday evenings is the Luzerne Festival Series featuring distinguished guest artists. This year, composer, John Corigliano, who received an Oscar for best original score for The Red Violin will be in residence. Other activities include the Painted Pony Rodeo, one of the oldest Rodeos in the Country. Very popular restaurants in Lake Luzerne include Ciro’s, where you can get the best steak and hearty Italian, the Waterhouse known for it’s prime rib, and Up River Cafe which has new owners, great food and the best view in Town overlooking the Hudson River. Well maintained tennis courts sit along the Hudson River in the Village, and two public parks and beaches bring tourists from all over. In the winter months, the South Warren Snowmobile Club maintains a 100 mile snowmobiling trail system going through Lake Luzerne. Plus on the East side of Lake Luzerne is the West Mountain Ski area. I know I have mentioned a lot, but not nearly enough. Fabulous Adirondack Fall Foliage, hiking on nearby Hadley Mountain, fishing in the Lakes and the Saratoga and North Creek Railroad are just a few more activities.
